Department of Transportation Announces New School Zone Automated Enforcement Locations
Tuesday Jul 29th, 2025
Additional locations will increase traffic safety in school zones and city communities; New commercial vehicle height monitoring location will also be implemented
Baltimore, MD (July 29, 2025) – The Baltimore City Department of Transportation today announced that new automated speed enforcement locations will soon be implemented, along with a new commercial vehicle height monitoring enforcement location, as part of the City’s Automated Traffic Violation Enforcement System (ATVES).
Baltimore’s automated speed enforcement program is designed to promote safe driving by reducing driver speeds in school zones throughout the city. The speed camera monitoring system consists of portable and fixed cameras that detect vehicles which exceed the posted speed limit by at least 12 miles per hour.
Speed cameras in Baltimore City school zones operate Monday through Friday, from 6:00AM to 8:00PM throughout the year. The speed camera violation fine is $40.00 as set by state law, and no license points are assessed.
Speed camera implementation will begin on or about Monday, August 11, 2025, at the following locations, including multiple directions:
· 200-400 blocks of E. 29th Street – Barclay Elementary School
· 3200-3600 blocks of Pulaski Highway – Highlandtown Elementary/Middle School
In addition to the speed camera locations, a new commercial vehicle height monitoring enforcement location will be installed. This system helps to reduce traffic congestion and damage to streets, homes, and other infrastructure by commercial vehicles that unlawfully drive along restricted roadways. The vehicle height monitoring system is used to record images of commercial vehicles traveling on truck restricted (posted/signed) roadways in Baltimore City. When a truck over 12.5 feet high is detected by the camera system, photos and video are taken to capture the registration identification of the vehicle’s cab.
Vehicle height monitoring cameras are operational 24 hours a day, every day of the year along roadways that are posted with truck restricted signs unless restrictions are only enforced during certain times. The fine for a Commercial Vehicle Height Monitoring System violation is:
· First Offense – Warning
· Second Offense – $125.00
· Third or Subsequent Offenses – $250.00 each
Implementation of the Commercial Vehicle Height Monitoring System will begin on or about Monday, August 11, 2025, at the following location, including multiple directions:
· 1200 block of N. Gay Street, Baltimore, MD 21213
In the event a commercial vehicle is traveling on a restricted roadway for delivery to a specific location, a copy of the bill of lading, Maryland One permit, or other proof of local delivery is needed to be exempt. The city’s designated truck routes map is viewable here.
The block ranges listed above are approximations for the automated enforcement zones. Enforcement at all locations may be on a temporary, rotating, or permanent basis. To learn more about Baltimore’s ATVES program visit: https://transportation.baltimorecity.gov/atvesprogram.
